Bubba’s Book
I’m almost a third of the way through My Life, and I have to say that all the critics I’ve read and heard regarding Clinton’s book are completely full of shit. Some have said it’s self-indulgent. Whatthefuck? Of course he’s talking about himself, it’s a fucking MEMOIR. Do these folks not understand the concept? They say it’s long-winded. He talks about a lot of different things, and all the people behind any successful politician, but he never lingers too long on any particular anecdote. I’m still on the local Arkansas politics, and surprisingly it’s not boring at all. They say that it shows his tremendous ego. I say they didn’t read a single page in this book, because he’s been very hard on himself, and honest about his flaws and mistakes, both politically and personally. That’s been the most interesting aspect, reading about the choices he made (and why he made them at the time), and then reading his views on the advice he should have listened to and the lessons he learned (though often not enough to avoid making similar mistakes again). Honestly, forget your politics, it’s not very often that a two-term president will be writing his memoirs – isn’t that intriguing in and of itself? Reagan couldn’t remember how to wipe his own ass by the time he left the White House in 1988, and I wouldn’t put money on a Bush memoir at any point in the future. So if you find yourself intimidated by a nearly 1000 page autobiography about a popular and successful two-term president who came from a common background and left this country peaceful and prosperous despite a strong opposition and numerous obstacles of both his own and others’ creation, well, you’re a douche. And if you help let this country rot, I’m telling you now that I told you so. And I’ll give a wave from a beach in Queensland, Australia.
