Miscellaneous Ramblings
- First off, Spring is back here in the ‘anta, and the pollen has returned. Apparently last Monday the pollen count was 5861, the second-highest reading since they started tracking it in 1995. And for reference, anything higher than 120 (no, that’s not a typo, we’re talking order of magnitude here) is considered extreme. So Nature’s spooge is all over everything, and I’m very lucky I’m not allergic. If you are, best get your meds.
- Took advantage of the Fulton County Free Weekend last week and checked out the two new exhibitions at the High. Chuck Close: Self-Portraits 1967-2005 was ok, a little repetitive (although that’s the whole point), but really nothing I hadn’t seen before somewhere from someone. The Quilts of Gee’s Bend was cool, though I wonder how many folks realize that they’re looking at pieces of old clothes reborn as unique homemade quilts. Neither holds a candle to the last exhibition of Andrew Wyeth, but very little would.
- I’m loving the new Nike Soccer Joga Bonito ads. My favorite is the Ronaldinho one, and I dig Timmy Howard lobbing
- I thought Aussie Rules Football was off of American TV this season when Fox Soccer Channel stopped running it, but it’s now on Setanta Sports. Yes I have no life.
- Three rounds of the new Formula 1 season are in the books, and even though Renault has taken all the victories, the new rules changes have made things a lot more exciting. The knockout qualifying system has been particularly cool. And if you’re into F1 and you haven’t yet procured yourself a TiVo, what the hell are you waiting for? You’re not waking up at 4 am to watch a race, are you? Sucker.
- Rolling Stone selected its annual 10 Artists To Watch a few weeks ago, and I was surprised, though pleased, to see local unsigned faves The Whigs on the list. I told y’all the Atlanta rock scene’s been blowing up lately.
