And We’re Still In The Desert
Jarhead belongs on the same shelf with Full Metal Jacket and Hell Is For Heroes, a brutally honest, gut punching war film. Sam Mendes made pretty much all the right calls, a lot of sharp, twisted humor, and when the film got intense the large, sold out theater was completely awestruck silent. My main criticism is that the epilogue is a letdown and should not have been included, it’s a poor ending and it wouldn’t have been had it ended a couple minutes earlier. Excellent performances as usual from Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard, and a star turn from Jake Gyllenhaal. Since Donnie Darko, I’ve been told on multiple occasions that I look like him – I used to consider that a backhanded compliment, I won’t anymore. There’s a bit of that McQueen thing here – guys want to be him, women want to be with him. And yes ladies, you get to see his ass multiple times.
